A Bondage Positions Guide

The world of BDSM is wonderful, and bondage is one of the more commonly tried kink out of the term - yes, that’s right, BDSM and bondage aren’t the same! BDSM covers a range of kinks, including bondage and discipline, domination and submission, sadism, and masochism. So, bondage is a part of the BDSM family.

Bondage involves taking sexual satisfaction by being bound by or subjected to external power or control and does include domination and submission if sexual activity is done by two people. In successful bondage relationships, both the dominant and the submissive derive sexual pleasure from the experience.

Whether you enjoy being gagged, you’re a fan of shibari, or you’ve just purchased your first bondage accessory (we recommend bed restraints or a sex swing!), you will need to know about the positions you can try.

In this article, we’re going to run you through a selection of bondage positions that you can try, looking at rope bondage, self-bondage, beginner bondage, sex swing bondage, and even light bondage.

So, strap yourself in (pun intended!), and let us take you on a bondage positions tour, giving you a list of the best BDSM bondage positions out there!

Beginner Bondage Positions

If you’re just getting into bondage or you’re wanting to dip your toes into the world of BDSM, you need to ease into it. So, we’re going to be giving you some easy bondage positions to try! Although these light bondage positions might not seem overly intense or too dangerous, they can do harm if you’re not careful. So, take care, even if you see these positions as just “light”.

Bed Restrained Missionary

How To: The person who wants to be submissive needs to get into restraints on the bed, whether they are under bed restraints or DIY restraints such as ties, and face up. They can be restrained fully, or just their arms or legs can be restrained in the restraints. A blindfold can also be added to enhance the experience if wanted. Then, the dominant partner can penetrate in a missionary position.

Chair Bound

How To: Obviously, the first thing you need to do is find a chair! Once you have a chair, the submissive needs to sit on the chair, and their hands can be bound to the back of the chair. Although more extreme versions of this position do bind the submissive to the chair completely (legs, hands, waist, etc etc!), if you’re a beginner, binding your hands to the chair is a good place to start.

Blindfolded Doggy

How To: Blindfolded doggy is pretty simple but extremely effective! All the submissive needs to do is put a blindfold on and get into a doggy position - on their all fours with their butt up. Then, the penetrating partner can take them from behind. Although adding a blindfold to any sex position can add an element of bondage, being blindfolded in doggy is particularly powerful as the dominant can take the submissive from the behind without having to come into close other bodily contact with them as with other positions such as missionary.

Rope Bondage Positions

Using rope is incredibly common in bondage and it has two common benefits. Obviously, the first benefit to using rope in bondage is that it can easily restrain the submissive, and the second benefit is that it can add to the pleasure experienced by the person that’s bound.

Like always with anything BDSM, it’s incredibly important to take care when using rope, paying special attention to how tight you tie the rope and in what position you tie the rope to ensure that you don’t cut blood circulation off.

Hogtie

How To: This is one of the most commonly done rope bondage positions, and it can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. To get into a basic hogtie position, the submissive lays on their front and then has their ankles tied together, their wrists tied behind their back, and then the wrist and ankle rope tied together. The penetrating partner can then take them from behind.

Crab

How To: To get into a crab position, the submissive sits on the floor or bed with their legs bent. Then, the thigh and ankle of each leg are tied together so the legs cannot be moved, and the wrist and elbow are then tied to the leg rope using a two-column tie. This locks the crab position and allows the dominant to enjoy and take their submissive as they see fit.

Shibari

Although Shibari isn’t just one position, we thought that we’d mention simply because it is incredible, and for those that take pleasure in the aesthetic of bondage, this one is for you! Shibari is a form of ancient Japanese rope bonding that can be explored however you see fit, as long as you work on the basics and of course, be safe! Shibari often uses suspension too, but as a beginner, just work on mastering the knots first!

Self-Bondage Positions

Bondage doesn’t just have to be a joint activity, but if you do practice self-bondage, you need to be extremely careful. You have to know exactly how to release yourself from the positions that you get into and you need to be aware of how you tie yourself to ensure you don’t cut off your circulation.

Wrist Tie

How To: You can either tie your wrists together, or you can tie one of your wrists and attach it to a bedpost or a hook, allowing the other hand to be free to pleasure yourself with.

Legs Tie

How To: There are two ways that you can tie your legs. You can either tie them together using rope between your ankles and add a spreader bar if you have one, or you can tie your ankles and attach them to bedposts or hooks. Then, you can use your hands to pleasure yourself.

Crotch Bondage

How To: You can focus your bondage on your crotch, giving you increased stimulation and allowing you to feel bound. You can place a piece of rope or silk rope (whatever you’re comfortable with!) down and around your crotch, giving your clitoris (if you’re female) and ass increased stimulation. Then you can wrap the rope around your lower waist above your crotch to increase the feeling of being bound.

Sex Swing Bondage Positions

Sex swings are great accessories to use in bondage sex, allowing you to explore BDSM, role play, and restraint. Sex swings are typically used with a partner but can be used alone too, with the best type of swing being an over-door swing!

Hanging Ass Out

How To: The partner in the sex swing has to hang from the sex swing and drop their butt down, holding the upper straps for balance and support. The other partner can then either approach from behind standing up or by lying on the floor below if the sex swing is close to the floor.

Legs Up

How To: The partner who will be penetrating needs to stand in front of the sex swing, then the person in the sex swing needs to put their legs up onto their partner’s shoulders. Then, the penetration can begin!

Sit Up Straight

How To: The partner in the sex swing needs to sit up straight in the swing as if they are actually on a normal swing. They can use the upper straps to hold their weight and balance and use the lower foot straps for stability. The other partner can then penetrate from behind whilst standing.
