What Is a Dildo? A Guide to Everything You Wanted To Know About Dildos

Dildos, as described in the dictionary, are “an object resembling a penis used for sexual stimulation”. You can use this type of sex toy for penetration, either vaginal, anal, or oral, and typically they don’t vibrate. Most dildos replicate a real penis, with a variety of different shapes, colors, and sizes out there! However, they can also be a little more abstract and not replicate a penis, which can be good for those that are looking for a more discreet type of toy.

With dildos being one of the most popular types of sex toys on the market (research shows that 60% of sex toy owners have a dildo!), it’s important to get to know a little about dildos, and of course, if you’re interested in getting a toy, you will want to take dildos into account.

In this article, we’re going to take a look into the world of dildos, taking you through the history of the dildo, telling you about the different types of dildos out there, letting you know how to use a dildo, how to clean your dildo, and the lubes to use (including our personal favorite)!

You'll also learn about the best dildo out there on the market. So, stay tuned for that, and let’s dive right in.

A Brief History of The Dildo

Research shows that dildos have been used since the Stone Age, with graphic illustrations dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, India, and Rome. So, they’ve been around for a while!

The most notable periods of time in dildo history are the 17th century in the UK, the 18th century in Japan, and the 20th century across the Western world when dildos were featured in mainstream entertainment programs.

Dildos were used for different reasons over time, and they have obviously changed significantly over time in terms of materials, shape, size, but the general basis of them has always been the same, so they’ve actually been tried and tested for centuries!

The Difference Between A Dildo And A Vibrator

Although dildos and vibrators may look similar in many cases, they are completely different types of toys, both offering different types of benefits.

Although dildos can have electrical components, the main difference between dildos and vibrators is that dildos typically do not have electrical components. However, vibrators do!

Vibrators, as the name suggests, vibrate! They also have different types of functions such as clitoral stimulators and remote controls for long-distance partners.

Although dildos are a little more retro and require more physical work than vibrators, a lot of people prefer to use them since they simulate a real penis more than a vibrator does.

The Different Types of Dildos

Now you know a little about the history of the dildo and how it differs from vibrators, it’s time to take a look at the different types of dildos out there so you can figure out which one is best suited to you.

Suction Cup Dildos

Suction cup dildos are dildos that have a suction cup at the base, as the name might suggest! The benefits of a suction cup dildo are that it allows you to have a hands-free experience, as well as allows you to place your dildo safely and securely on a variety of surfaces, from walls and floors to furniture.

These types of dildos come in a variety of sizes, colors, and keels (some, like the Alora Dildo, have keels to hit the g-spot!), and can be used for vaginal and anal penetration.

A lot of people enjoy the fact that suction cup dildos can be used in the shower and bath (as long as the dildo is waterproof!).

Double-Ended Dildos

Double-ended dildos are dildos that allow two people to be penetrated with the same toy at the same time, either vaginally or anally. However, this type of toy can also be used by one person on their own to penetrate both the vagina and the anus due to the fact that these types of dildos are incredibly flexible if soft, or often v-shaped.

These types of dildos are often used by same-sex couples but can of course also be enjoyed by heterosexual couples before penetration too - they’re perfect for sharing pleasure with a partner at the same time.

Strap-On Dildos

Strap-on dildos are two-part toys - one part is the dildo and the other part is the harness on which the dildo is attached. Strap-on dildos are typically worn by one person that penetrates their partner. However, strap-on dildos can also be attached to objects if people want to use them alone for masturbation.

Although everyone can of course use a strap-on, they are most often associated, used, and loved by lesbian couples. However, they can also be incredibly useful toys for BDSM and pegging.

Squirting Dildos

Squirting dildos look like regular dildos but they have a reservoir inside them that the user inserts lube of fake semen into, which can then be ejaculated out of the dildo to replicate real ejaculation!

This type of dildo is perfect for those looking for a more realistic penis sensation and experience, as well as those that enjoy the process of ejaculation, whether within them, on their face, or other body parts.

Inflatable Dildos

Inflatable dildos are, as the name suggests (can you tell there’s a pattern there!), dildos that inflate. This type of dildo is inserted within the user, in the vagina, anus, or mouth, and is then pumped to a size that the user finds satisfying.

Inflatable dildos are perfectly suited for those that like to feel as if they are “full”, as well as those that enjoy wide girth but without the potentially painful entrance that may be associated with wide girth dildos.

How To Use A Dildo - Safety Tips

Choose a Dildo Made From Safe Materials

It’s incredibly important that you choose sex toys made from body-safe materials - you should use non-porous materials such as silicone, glass, and metal. Medical-grade silicone really is the best material for sex toys to be made from, so when you’re looking to purchase a new toy, go for one made from this material!

Work Your Way Up With Girth

If you know you love and appreciate a wider girth, then it could be ok to choose a dildo with a wide girth. However, most people should start with a dildo that has a small girth and work their way up, otherwise, you may find that you experience pain and struggle to properly enjoy your toy.

Use Lube

Lube is super useful and beneficial for any kind of sexual experience, but even more so with toys. Using lube enhances pleasure, helps with vaginal dryness and anal penetration, as well as reduces the risk of pain and injury. Our personal favorite lube on the market is Foria Intimacy Sex Oil with CBD which offers clean, organic ingredients. Foria Intimacy Sex Oil with 400mg broad-spectrum CBD, provides enhanced moisture, arousal and soothes any pain and excites. How To Clean A Dildo

Since most dildos do not have electrical components and are waterproof, there are several ways that you can clean them.

First things first, whenever you are cleaning any type of sex toy, you should always use a mild, antibacterial soap to make sure that it doesn’t irritate your skin or damage the material of the toy. So, get that type of soap at the ready!

Then, you can take the soap and fully submerge the dildo, as long as it’s waterproof and doesn’t have electrical components, and gently clean it with your hands or a cloth, or you can gently wash the dildo with a clean damp cloth and a small bowl of water if it does have electrical components.

If your dildo is made from medical-grade silicone and it’s waterproof, you can simply submerge it into boiling water to cleanse and sterilize it.

Although people tend to think putting sex toys into a dishwasher is a good idea, there really is no benefit to doing that, and it may even damage your toys. So, stick to hand washing!
